Salters' Festival of Chemistry
07.05.2009

UCC's Chemistry Department was the setting on Wednesday, May 6th 2009 for the annual Salters' Festival of Chemistry. Ten schools in the Munster region which included eight from Cork plus one each from Kerry and Limerick were represented at the Festival.
Four pupils from each school, accompanied by their Chemistry teacher, participated in the event which aims to make chemistry more exciting, more relevant and fun to students aged 11 to 13 years.

The fun-filled day of chemistry kicked off in the morning with teams participating in a competitive, hands-on, practical activity, “Murder at Saltmarsh Farm” which tested their analytical chemistry skills.  The afternoon saw the pupils competing in the “University Challenge”, a practical activity chosen by the University, in which they were required to forensically identify a series of chemicals that have lost their labels. This was followed by the now famous Chemistry Magic Show, hosted by Dr Declan Kennedy.

Dr JJ Keating, School of Pharmacy, UCC welcoming the students and teachers said:  “UCC is delighted to be associated with this festival. This fun event provides a platform to encourage pupils to consider a career in chemistry and highlight the fact that chemistry is a fun subject with many practical applications.”

The day concluded with a Prizegiving Ceremony at which all participants were presented with individual fun prizes and participation certificates. Winners of the Salters’ Challenge was the team from Scoil Mhuire with one team from North Presentation victorious in the University Challenge. Both teams received cash prizes for their schools. Professor Jeremy Glennon, Head of the Chemistry Department at UCC extended his congratulations to the pupils and expressed his gratitude to all involved in the organisation of the event.

The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry are an initiative of The Salters' Institute, whose aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. The Festival at UCC is one of a series of 55 Festivals taking place at Universities throughout Ireland and the UK between March and June 2009.

The Institute is delighted that the Royal Society of Chemistry is again working in partnership with it for the Festivals this year.
