Risk Management in Mental Health National Guidelines Launched
16.11.2009

National guidelines on risk management in mental health were launched on Friday last (November 13th 2009) at Dr Steeven’s Hospital, Dublin.
The development of the guidelines was a collaborative effort between UCC’s School of Medicine, the Health Services Executive (HSE), the Clinical Indemnity Scheme and clinical risk managers in mental health practice.

“Protecting patients and others from harm is a key priority for mental health services and national standards for risk management is an essential component of providing such protection for Irish citizens”, explained Dr Margaret O’Rourke. Dr O’Rourke is a Consultant Forensic Clinical Psychologist and Director of Behavioural Science at UCC’s Medical School.  She has been working with the Health Service Executive, the Clinical Indemnity Scheme and risk managers across the country to develop specific guidance for mental health services.

The guidance serves to support a more positive and proactive approach to risk in the planning and delivery of services in Ireland. Risk Management in Mental Health Services will be rolled out across the country over the coming months.

Pictured at the launch were back row L-R: Dr Conor O’Neill, Mr Tony Leahy, Ms Una McCarthy, Mr David Gaskin, Ms Pauline Gill. Front Row L-R: Dr Martin Rogan, Dr David Vaughan, Dr Ailis Quinlan, Dr Margaret O’Rourke and Ms Debbie Dunne.
