Public Lecture to focus on UCC's Environmental Research Institute (ERI)
14.04.2009

UCC's Research Highlights Lecture Series will continue with the next lecture tomorrow, Wednesday April 15th when Professor Alan Dobson Director of the Environmental Research Institute (ERI), will discuss environment, marine and energy-based research at the Institute.  The lecture will be delivered at 1pm in Kane Building G2.
"Developments in science, research and innovation can play an important role in rising to the environmental protection challenges. Quality research provides the foundation for credible decision-making, while technology and innovation provide solutions to environmental problems.... today's environmental research will become tomorrow's environmental protection" - EPA State of the Environment Report 2008.

"The complexity of many of the environmental issues we face as a society requires solutions that need the combined efforts of different scientific and engineering disciplines", explained Professor Dobson.  The Environmental Research Institute, was established in 2000, under the High Education Authority's Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI)-cycle 2; and has received subsequent funding in both cycles 3 and 4. The ERI brings together over 150 researchers and integrates research from 10 different departments and four research centres into one Institute, thereby facilitating a more strategic approach to research in the environmental arena at UCC.  The interdisciplinary research environment at the ERI enables researchers to work together in large, multi-skilled teams that draw on each discipline's core competences to address scientific questions of environmental relevance in a synergistic manner.

The success of the ERI owes a great deal to the High Education Authority's PRLTI programme which has been central to the rapid expansion of environmental based research at UCC.  Drawing on research supported by the PRTLI programme Professor Dobson will present a cross-section of environmental, marine and energy based research currently being undertaken by Institute researchers at both the ERI and its associated research centres and in will highlight particular research success stories from the PRTLI programmes.  He will also outline the future strategic plans for the Institute in the areas of Environment, Energy and Marine; with reference to the Strategy for Science Technology & Innovation (2006-2013) and the recent "Building Ireland's Smart Economy" policy documents.

To celebrate 10 years of PRTLI investment in UCC, and to mark its contribution to the development of the University, the region and the nation, the UCC Research Highlights Lecture Series aims to convey to a wide audience the significance and impact of PRTLI investment in UCC.

The Lecture Series will continue until May 7th 2009 and cover a wide range of topics including nanoscience and technology; food & health; cell biology; environment, marine and energy.
