Public Consultation on Electoral Reform

The recent financial crisis and meltdown of the Irish economy has sharpened focus on the role and workload of politicians in our system. In light of this, the Joint Houses of the Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution has been looking at the electoral system and how it determines the nature of politics in Ireland.
The Committee on the Constitution will hold a public meeting in UCC tomorrow, Thursday, November 26th. The meeting will be hosted by the Department of Government and will take place in the Aula Maxima at 7.30 pm.

The Committee is reviewing all aspects of the electoral system, PR-STV and is especially keen on hearing the views of the public on improvements and/or reforms, which could be implemented. Over the past number of weeks, the Committee has been hearing from members of the Oireachtas, academics and interested parties on key questions such as:
  • The constituency workload of the TD
  • Women in politics
  • Voting age
  • Ballot paper design
  • Constituency boundaries, and,
  • Diversity in Irish politics.
At tomorrow's meeting, the Committee will hear submissions from Professor David Gwynn Morgan, Faculty of Law, UCC; Dr Theresa Reidy, Department of Government, UCC and Dr Adrian Kavanagh, Department of Geography, National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Students of Government and Politics in UCC will also be making contributions based on their studies of electoral politics.

Members of the public are also invited to make oral submissions at the meeting.

The Committee is comprised of TDs and Senators and is chaired by Deputies Seán Ardagh and Jim O’Keeffe.

Student participation in this event has been funded by the National Academy for the Integration of Teaching and Research with additional support from the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences and the College of Business and Law.
