Congratulations to Lisa Cummins who becomes the first Irish person to swim the English Channel both ways. Lisa, a PhD student in Computer Science at UCC, becomes the first female in the world to complete the swim without ever having completed a channel crossing before and joins an elite club of just 20 people who have done so.
Lisa spent 35 hours and 36 minutes swimming both ways across the channel – a challenge known as the Everest of open-water swimming. The channel also contains the world’s busiest shipping lanes. During the crossing, Lisa had to contend with treacherous tidal surges and when she arrived at the French coast, barely had enough time to recover her breath and collect a stone as a memento before heading back again. The achievement marks her out as an outstanding and courageous sportsperson.
The swim raised thousands of euro for three charities – the Jack and Jill Foundation, Marymount Hospice and the Cork ARC Cancer Support House.
