New UCC postgraduate programme to benefit the health sector
03.07.2009

How economic decision-making can be applied to the health care sector will be the focus of a new postgraduate programme launched by UCC's Department of Economics.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics Practice is aimed at health sector practitioners and professionals, and graduates in health-related disciplines, as well as those who may have already studied economics at undergraduate level.  It has the option of an add-on MA in Health Economics Practice.  The programme aims to meet the demand for training in health economics, in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

This taught programme is available on a full-time or part-time basis and will commence in September 2009.

Students who successfully complete the programme and achieve a required minimum standard will have the option of transferring their registration to the MA Health Economics Practice.  This programme involves a six-month work placement, and a report thereon.  Programme Director, Brian Turner, explained:  "The option to transfer to the MA programme gives students the opportunity to apply the decision-making tools they learn during the taught element of the programme to the health sector in a real-world situation.  This experience should prove invaluable to those seeking a job in the health sector or to those wishing to progress their careers in the sector."

A Bridging Programme will be provided for applicants for the Postgraduate Diploma who have not previously studied economics. This programme will run during the summer.

The closing date for receipt of applications is July 10th.  Further details on the programme can be obtained by contacting the Programme Directors, Aileen Murphy, aileen.murphy@ucc.ie (tel. 021 4901924) and Brian Turner, b.turner@ucc.ie, tel. 021 4901925, Department of Economics, UCC.
