New SFI funded Irish Separation Science Cluster
26.05.2009

A Research Team from UCC’s Chemistry Department is set to enlarge the activities and facilities of its Innovative Chromatography group following a major Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) award establishing the Irish Separation Science Cluster (ISSC).
The Research Cluster is an academia-industry collaboration involving University College Cork, Dublin City University, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Agilent Technologies, Dionex Corporation, Merck KGaA, and Pfizer Ireland, valued at a total of €4.9 million over five years.

The UCC team of Professor Jeremy Glennon, Dr Mila Pravda, Dr Dara Fitzpatrick and Dr Norma Scully will focus on developing novel separation and sensing devices for bio-analysis.  It recently presented at the first ISSC Management Forum and Research meeting at Dublin City University (DCU).

The ISSC is led by Professor Brett Paull, Dublin City University with Professor Jeremy Glennon heading the UCC team along with Dr Miroslav Pravda and Dr Dara Fitzpatrick as funded researchers. Dr Mirek Macka and Dr Brendan O’Connor, DCU are co-PI’s while Dr Dermot Brabazon is a funded researcher for the cluster from DCU. The funding will create 7 new postdoctoral researcher positions, 16 PhD positions, 4 PIs including a lead PI, 3 investigators and a number of administrative positions.

The Research Group brings together a team of researchers from a multidisciplinary background, spanning chemistry and materials, biotechnology and engineering, to develop the next generation of materials, methods and technologies to enable separation science overcome future challenges in the understanding and characterisation of complex biological systems, with particular emphasis being placed upon application within the growing biopharmaceutical and medical diagnostic industries.

In addition to the pharmaceutical sector, the impact of this cluster will extend to other important areas as well, including the food industry, chemical industry, environmental measurements and the associated regulatory bodies.

There are a number of funded PhD positions available in UCC within the SFI-ISSC.  Visit http://www.ucc.ie/en/chemistry/PhDResearchVacancies/

Pictured at the ISSC Launch were L-R: Mr Padraig McDonnell, Agilent Technologies, Mr Declan Moran, Bristol-Meyer Squibb Company, Professor Brett Paull, National Centre for Sensor Research (NCSR), Professor Jeremy Glennon, UCC, Dr Mirek Macka, NCSR and Dr Brendan O’Connor, NCSR.
