New online resource, e-PUB, to benefit UCC students
10.03.2009

UCC students who are concerned about their alcohol use are set to benefit with the announcement of the availability of a new online resource, e-PUB. The Student Health Department and UCC Students’ Union have announced the launch of the resource to coincide with National Alcohol Awareness Week which runs from March 9th-15th 2009.
e-PUB (an acronym for Electronic Personal Use Barometer) is an online resource which has been developed by a team of psychologists in San Diego US.  It is designed to allow individual students get immediate feedback online about their own alcohol use, how it compares with recommended daily maximum alcohol intake, and illustrates examples of adverse consequences that can result from either binge drinking or chronic over indulgence.

The resource is based on a program which has been successfully used in the US and now tailored to suit Irish drinking habits following collaboration with the Health Promotion Officer of National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG). The e-PUB has been further refined for use by UCC students with links to other local agencies and resources available to students concerned about their drinking.

UCC Students’ Union President, Cal Diolúin, welcoming the initiative said: “We are all too well aware of the adverse consequences of excessive alcohol intake, and it is timely that we now have a readily available tool that students can use to gauge the levels and effects of their own drinking habits.”

Dr Michael Byrne, Head of Student Health Service confirmed that students appear positive with the resource: “We have piloted the site over the past four weeks and have had very positive feedback about the layout and design of the site”, he said.  Keith O’Brien, UCC Students’ Union Welfare Officer agrees: “I am delighted that e-PUB has now been made available for UCC students, I have been advocating for its introduction since I first saw it and used it over 12 months ago. I hope as many students as possible will respond to the resource.”

A trial version of the e-Pub site is being made available to all students in Ireland this week to co-incide with National Alcohol Awareness week, but it is intended that the UCC e-PUB will be available on an on-going basis for use by students of UCC having been commissioned by the Student Health Department.

The e-PUB UCC can be accessed from links on the Students’ Union, Student Health Department and Student Counselling and Development websites.
