Lifetime Achievement Award for Irish Researcher and Surgeon

Pioneering Irish surgeon and researcher, Professor Gerald O’Sullivan, Director of the Cork Cancer Research Centre in UCC, has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Journal of Medical Science (IJMS) Doctor Awards.
The Doctor Awards, now in their tenth year, awarded the Founder and Director-in-Chief of Cork Cancer Research Centre the prestigious award at the Mansion House, Dublin on November 26th 2009. 

The immediate past president of the Royal College of Surgeons, Cork-born, Professor O’Sullivan pioneered the development of four new cancer treatments from the laboratory through to early clinical trial. He has also developed several new surgical innovations and techniques which have been applied to minimally invasive and gastrointestinal surgery.

Professor O’Sullivan currently holds ten patents, several of which have been commercialised by the University Industrial Programme. A distinguished academic and clinician, Professor O’Sullivan has authored and co-authored over 160 papers, particularly in the areas of diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

President of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Ireland, Professor Tom Walsh, who delivered the citation at the Awards ceremony, praised Professor O’Sullivan on his contributions to medicine in Ireland.  “Professor O’Sullivan is one of the most outstanding surgeons of his generation and one of its most original thinkers.  His creativity and contribution to medical science has been recognised both in Europe where he currently holds the Presidency of the European Surgical Association and in America where he was recently awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the American College of Surgeons (ACS)", said Professor Walsh.

Four UCC medical researchers were also honoured for published research in other categories:
  • Dr Safraz Ahmad (Cork Cancer Research Centre, UCC) – 2009 Award for Best Published Surgery and Oncology Research
  • Dr Ivan Perry (Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, UCC) – 2009 Award for Best Published Endocrinology Research
  • Dr Jude Ryan (Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, UCC) – 2009 Award for Best IJMS Published Research Article
  • Dr Brian O’Donnell (Dept. of Anaesthesia, CUH) – 2009 Awarded for Best Published Pain and Anaesthesia Research.
