Irish Association for Chinese Teaching and Learning (IACTL)

The Irish Association for Chinese Teaching and Learning (IACTL) was established on May 2nd 2009. Its headquarters are in UCC.
Members include academics, language teachers and administrators from UCC, UCD, DCU, TCD, NUIM, ITT, DIT, Post-Primary Languages Initiative, Ireland China Contact Group (ICCG), schools and communities in Cork and Ireland and representatives from the Japan Foundation.

Professor Fan Hong, Director, Institute of Chinese Studies at UCC explained: “The establishment of the IACTL has laid the foundation for systematic research on teaching and learning oriental languages in Ireland”.

The inaugural Seminar on May 2nd concentrated on the “Teaching of Chinese in Ireland:  Practice, Purpose and Policy”. The purpose the seminar, held under the auspices of the Confucius Institute at UCC, was threefold:
  • to review the current and future context for the teaching of Chinese in Ireland
  • to provide an overview of current provision and to share knowledge and experience about pedagogical practice, materials and assessment procedures
  • to establish a forum to advise on future planning in Chinese language education in Ireland and to agree priorities for action.
Speakers included: Dr George Zhang, Director of London Confucius Institute, SOAS; Professor Mary Ruane, Director of Applied Language Centre, UCD; Dr Muiris O’Laoire, Institute of Technology Tralee; Dr Zhang Lihua, Confucius Institute, UCC; Mr Qin Bo, Confucius Institute, UCC and Dr Pat Kelleher, Irish Chinese Contact Group.

Professor Fan Hong, Director of the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies at UCC and Professor Dong Huiqin, First Secretary, Education Section, Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Ireland, chaired the workshop and panel discussion. Ms Karen Ruddock, National Co-ordinator of the Post-Primary Languages Initiative, Department of Education and Science, Dr Yuriko Kayamoto and Ms Mariko Takishita from the Japan Foundation, participated in the discussion.
