International Symposium for Engineering Education 2010
16.09.2009

The 3rd International Symposium for Engineering Education (ISEE2010) will take place in UCC on July 1st and 2nd 2010 under the theme “Educating Engineers for a Changing World - leading transformation from an unsustainable global society”.
“ISEE2010 promises to be a significant international conference in the field of engineering education and will explore a number of key issues relating to engineering education in the twenty first century,” according to Symposium Chair, Dr Edmond Byrne. “These include sustainability in engineering education, IT applications, industry perspectives, pedagogical approaches & assessment for learning outcomes and the Bologna process.” Further details on ISEE2010 can be found at its website at: http://www.ucc.ie/isee2010/

The Symposium will incorporate a keynote address by Professor David Shallcross of University of Melbourne, and editor the IChemE/EFCE transactions journal “Education for Chemical Engineers”.  Professor Shallcross will address the Symposium on the possible evolution of accreditation requirements by engineering institutions such as IChemE, in light of recent sustainability informed initiatives. The Symposium will also include a keynote address from the main sponsor Bord Gáis, focusing on the “Industry perspectives on engineering education” theme, as well as the international launch of a publication titled “Engineering Education & Sustainable Development - A Guide for Rapid Curriculum Renewal” by Cheryl Desha and Charlie Hargroves, of the Australian based engineering sustainability think tank ‘The Natural Edge Project’ (http://www.naturaledgeproject.net/). This publication has had the input of over 70 engineering academics worldwide and represents the latest advance in the area.

Desha will also deliver a keynote address and oversee a Delegate Workshop during the Symposium on developing sustainable development descriptors for engineering education. There will also be a Professional Engineering Institutions (PEI) Forum, where PEI’s will discuss their conception of future trends in accreditation guidelines in the context of some higher level sustainability initiatives they have taken in recent times where they appear to envisage a wider role for engineering practitioners. An International Advisory Panel, comprising over 50 experts spanning 13 countries has been assembled to oversee a thorough peer review process in advance of the Symposium.

Pictured at the launch of ISEE2010 are Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head, College of Science, Engineering & Food Science, UCC; Dr Edmond Byrne, Chair, ISEE2010 and Cathal Gallagher of Bord Gáis, main sponsor.
