Exciting opportunities for UCC Government students

Students of UCC’s BSc Government degree course recently began work placement in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and the Massachusetts State Legislature in Boston.

Students of UCC’s BSc Government degree course recently began work placement in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and the Massachusetts State Legislature in Boston.
Ten students are working in the Scottish Parliament while seven students are undertaking their work placement in the Massachusetts State Legislature. The work placements provide students with the opportunity to participate in government and the legislative process through a well-structured practical learning environment.
Mark O’Regan, a second year BSc Government student was selected as one of only thirty-two students from Ireland and Northern Ireland to have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the new Obama administration. Mark has been assigned to work with House Representative, Patrick J. Kennedy, son of Senator Ted Kennedy and nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Over 300 students applied to the Washington Ireland Programme and Mark, from Glanmire, County Cork, becomes the only UCC student selected. “When I applied for the Washington Ireland Programme, it seemed like such a distant, almost unattainable thing. Being a BSc Government student here in UCC means that working in Washington DC is that extra bit special, it being the political centre of the world”.
Based in the Department of Government, UCC, the BSc Government degree combines political science with business, law, modern languages, social science and IT. “We offer students many different opportunities to find interesting and rewarding work placements”, explained Fiona Buckley, Academic Director of the BSc Government Work Placement Programme. Some fifty percent of students travel abroad annually to countries such as the United States, Great Britain, Belgium and Spain to complete their work placements.
