Eli Lilly supports UCC Programme
09.06.2009

Eli Lilly has announced its support for the Cancer Biology PhD Scholars Programme at UCC that was funded by the Health Research Board in 2007. It is the first dedicated PhD training Programme in Cancer Biology to be established in Ireland and has already generated intensive international demand for places.
One cohort of scholars is already in training and a second cohort of scholars coming from several leading universities and six different countries will start in October next. Scholars who graduate from this Programme will be equipped with the skills to become the scientists and health care professionals that are needed world-wide to manage the increasing burden of cancer.

The PhD Scholars Programme involves investigators from several UCC Departments and Schools. It is linked with programmes in other Irish Universities and with several international centres of excellence in cancer research.

At the recent announcement in UCC, Jill Ahern of Eli Lilly said: “We are delighted to be associated with this important university project and our support demonstrates Eli Lilly’s commitment to supporting those wishing to pursue high quality PhD training in cancer research and treatment.” “As Lilly establishes its new biotech facility in Kinsale, this type of programme is very consistent with the type of science and medicines we are now exploring”, she added.

Professor Rosemary O’Connor, Director of the Programme expressed the sincerest gratitude of the University and emphasized the ongoing need for support of the PhD Programme from partners such as Eli Lilly.

Eli Lilly (www.lilly.com), a leading innovation-driven corporation, is developing a growing portfolio of first-in-class and best-in-class pharmaceutical products by applying the latest research from its own worldwide laboratories and from collaborations with eminent scientific organizations.  Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, Lilly provides answers – through medicines and information – for some of the world's most urgent medical needs.
