Dr Proinsias Ó Drisceoil to deliver the Annual Kevin Danaher Lecture
28.01.2009

One of the pioneers of Irish language publishing in the nineteenth century will be the subject for discussion at the 2009 Kevin Danaher Lecture to be delivered by Dr Proinsias Ó Drisceoil at UCC on Thursday, February 5th 2009.
The Danaher Lecture, now in its fourth year, pays tribute to one of Ireland’s most eminent folklorists, Dr Caoimhín Ó Danachair. This year’s lecture will be the first to be presented in the Irish language. Ó Drisceoil’s lecture titled: “Seán Ó Dálaigh agus an Léann Dúchais” will discuss aspects of the work of the polymath Seán Ó Dálaigh.

Ó Dálaigh or O’Daly was born in Lickoran in County Waterford more than two hundred years ago; he was a scribe, antiquary, collector, publisher, translator, teacher, shopkeeper, activist, inspector and member of Kilkenny Corporation. He began to collect stories of the fianna when he was a teenager. He published Poets and Poetry of Munster in 1849, Reliques of Irish Jacobite Poetry in 1844 and The Irish Language Miscellany in 1876. His contribution to Irish learning and the emerging disciplines of the nineteenth century was huge. Ó Drisceoil is the author of Ar Scaradh Gabhail: An Fhéiniúlacht in Cín Lae Amhlaoibh Uí Shúilleabháin (An Clóchomhar 2000) and Seán Ó Dálaigh: Éigse agus Iomarbhá (Cork University Press 2007). He was editor of Culture in Ireland : Regions, Identity and Power (Belfast: Institute of Irish Studies,1993) and co-author of Foclóir Litríochta agus Critice (Dublin 2007). He is also editor of Tipperary Historical Journal/Irisleabhar Staire Thiobraid Árann.

“We are delighted with this opportunity to hear Ó Drisceoil” said Dr Stiofán Ó Cadhla, Head of Roinn an Bhéaloidis/Department of Folklore and Ethnology Department, UCC.  “It is fitting that this year’s lecture be given in Irish to commemorate and continue the interests of Caoimhín ó Danachair but also to give recognition to Seán Ó Dálaigh himself as a path breaker in our discipline”. Dr Ó Danachair worked in both the Irish and English languages.

The lecture will be delivered at 2.00pm on Thursday, February 5th, in the O’Rahilly Building, Room 255, UCC. Its proximity to St Brighid’s Day is intentional and is an effort to recognise Danaher’s pioneering work on calendar customs. All are welcome.
