On the night, UCC will also honour a graduate with an Alumnus Award for Voluntary Service to the University, which this year recognises a graduate for his excellent voluntary contribution to UCC sports over the past four decades.

The four distinguished UCC graduates who are being honoured with Alumni Achievement Awards are:

THE HON. MR JUSTICE PATRICK J McCARTHY was appointed as a Judge to the High Court in June 2007 and is one of only four UCC graduates to have been appointed as a Judge of the Superior Courts in the past 100 years.  He was called to the Bar in 1982.  He was subsequently called to the English Bar by the Middle Temple in 1988 and to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1991. Mr Justice McCarthy was appointed Senior Counsel in 2000.  He practised as a member of the Munster Circuit (based in Cork), as a member of the Junior Bar and was State Prosecutor for Cork City from 1989 to 2000.  He was called to the Inner Bar in 2000, working mainly in Dublin.

Justice Patrick McCarthy was a member of the General Council of the Bar of Ireland for a number of years, the Employment Appeals Tribunal, the Committee on Criminal Procedure (1995-1997) and the Criminal Law Consolidation Committee.  He was also a member of the International Association of Prosecutors, the Irish Society of European Law and the Legal History Society of Ireland, among others.

RORY McINERNEY is Vice President, Intel Corporation based in California.  A native of Limerick, Rory leads multiple engineering teams responsible for the design and development of microprocessors for the high performance computing market, involving close to 1,000 R&D engineers across the United States.

Rory is a founding member of the Irish Leadership Technology Group (ITLG), established in 2007 in Silicon Valley, comprised of  technology leaders in Silicon Valley who are Irish or Irish-American, with a commitment to helping Irish high-tech companies succeed globally. The group aims to help direct investment from Silicon Valley into Ireland while, at the same time, advising Irish companies trying to break into the American market.

He has published over 550 original papers, reviews, editorials and book chapters, and has received numerous awards and accolades for his work.

DR CON MURPHY is being honoured as the first ever recipient of the Alumnus Award for Voluntary Services to UCC.  He combines his busy general practice in Cork City with his commitments to UCC GAA and his deep involvement with the Cork County Board GAA Inter-County Teams.  He is Doctor to Cork Senior Football and & Hurling Teams since 1976.  He is currently President of the UCC Gaelic Football Club and has been involved with the Club either as a selector or medical officer since the early 1970’s.   Highlights with the Club include being team selector in 1973 and 1999 when UCC won the County Championships.

The annual UCC Alumni Achievement Awards Programme honours graduates who have obtained extraordinary distinction and success in their chosen fields. Both the Alumni Achievement Awards and the new Alumnus Award for Voluntary Service to UCC aim to foster a spirit of loyalty, involvement and commitment to UCC amongst alumni.  Dr Michael Murphy, UCC President said: “It gives me great pleasure to present an Alumnus Achievement Award to these graduates whose outstanding accomplishments have brought great honour to their alma mater. We regard our graduates as our global ambassadors and a valuable resource to the University.  As I have outlined in the recently-published University’s Strategic Plan for 2009-2012, the university plans to further deepen and extend its engagement with its global community of graduates.”
