Distinguished Sociologist, Professor Carol Smart
21.10.2009

The Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21), UCC (Family, Gender, Sexualities Research Group) is this week hosting Visiting Professor, Professor Carol Smart. Professor Smart is Co-Director of The Morgan Centre for the Study of Relationships and Personal Life, University of Manchester, UK.
The Visiting Fellowship is funded by the IRCHSS Research Development Initiative (Strand 2).

Professor Smart will present two papers and will give one master class to graduate students. The first paper, in collaboration with the Researching with Children Discussion Group, UCC, titled “Hauntings: Living with children's lives” was delivered on October 20th.

A seminar titled “The Politics of Family Secrets” aimed at graduate students will be delivered by Professor Smart today (Wednesday, October 21st October) from 3-5pm in the New Council Room, North Wing, UCC.

The second paper titled “Relationality and Socio-cultural Theories of Family Life” will be presented by Professor Smart tomorrow (Thursday, October 22nd), from 3-5pm in the New Council Room, North Wing, UCC.  This paper is in conjunction with the School of Sociology and Philosophy, Sociology Seminar Series.

Professor Smart’s main research interest over recent years has been family life and intimacy and the ways in which people conduct their personal lives. She has carried out research on divorce and/or separation and how this affects couples, children and wider kin; she has also focused on high conflict and how people can become enmeshed in protracted and negative relationships. Currently, she is writing up the results of a project on gay and lesbian civil partnership and commitment ceremonies. Almost of her research has had a socio-legal angle to it as well as a more straightforward sociological perspective. This reflects Professor Smart’s longstanding interest in how law influences personal lives and also how and why law is seen as a solution to personal dilemmas. Other recent research projects include a study on transnational families (with a focus on Pakistani, Indian and Irish families) and on intergenerational family life.
