19.02.2009

Cllr Brian Bermingham, Lord Mayor of Cork recently presented certificates to eight officials from Cork City Council on completion of a level one Chinese (Mandarin) course.
The 10-week course was provided by the Irish Institute for Chinese Studies (IICS) and the Confucius Institute at UCC.

“It’s part of the mission for the Institute and the Confucius Institute to promote Chinese culture,” said the Institute’s Director, Professor Fan Hong. The students warmly praised and thanked their teacher, Lu Zhouxiang, a PhD student and language instructor at the IICS.

The Lord Mayor also extended his congratulations to three PhD students at the IICS in UCC who have been awarded scholarships to study in China. They are the first group of UCC PhD students to receive the scholarship which is sponsored by the Shanghai government and Shanghai University.

Students Niall Duggan, Helen Louise Murphy and David O’Brien will spend up to six months at Shanghai University studying and carrying out research in their respective areas.

The scholarship has been organised through the IICS and the Confucius Institute at UCC.

Professor Fan Hong paid tribute to the warm relations between Shanghai and Cork which are twinned cities and spoke of the excellent opportunity available to the students who have received the scholarships.

Helen and David will travel to Shanghai in the coming weeks, while Niall has already left for China.

The Irish Institute of Chinese Studies offers many degree/diploma programs in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Most of these programmes require students to study in China to enhance their ability in spoken and written Chinese language and also improve their knowledge of Chinese culture, politics, and business.
