Celebrating Research Achievements at UCC
28.04.2009

The achievements of UCC researchers were honoured recently when Dr Michael Murphy, President acknowledged their success at a function at the university. UCC researchers have published a total of 18 articles in Nature and Science since 1974.
Ten of these have been produced in the past 10 years, of which six appeared in the past three years.  Among those to be honoured was Dr Daniel Falush of UCC’s Microbiology Department for the publication of his paper titled “Convergence of Campylobacter species: Implications for bacterial evolution” in Science in April 2008.

In 2008, Professor William O’Brien of UCC’s Archaeology Department was elected to Membership of the Royal Irish Academy in the Section of Polite Literature and Antiquities bringing UCC’s representation to 24 of the 404 Members (11 in Polite Literature and Antiquities, 13 in Science).

There are only 8 “Highly Cited” researchers in Ireland with five in UCC all associated with the Department of Food & Nutritional Sciences. This group of researchers are among 250 most cited researchers worldwide. In addition, 31 individuals were also honoured for their contribution to licensed technologies.
