Bursary for Tyndall Postgraduate
14.05.2009

The 2009 BOC Gases Postgraduate Bursary was presented recently to Courtney Collins at The Tyndall National Institute, UCC.
Courtney, a native of Ballincollig, Cork, graduated from UCC with a BSc degree in Chemistry (First Class Honours) in 2006. As part of her undergraduate degree, she undertook a three month research project in the Moleculer Microsystems group in Tyndall National Institute. At present, she is in her third year of a PhD in the Molecular Microsystems group in Tyndall National Institute under the supervision of Dr Damien WM Arrigan.

Her thesis work consists of the use of electrochemistry at an immiscible liquid-liquid interface for the extraction and detection of drugs in artificial physiological matrixes. An electrochemical system was developed that enabled the detection of therapeutic levels of drugs in biomimetic liquids such as artificial saliva and blood serum.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Gerry Donovan, Business Director, BOC Gases, said: “We wish Courtney success with her future career.  BOC Gases is well aware of the importance of research for the continuing development of the successful high technology companies, which are established in Ireland.  We are delighted to play our part in support of this vital activity.”

BOC Gases is a member of the Linde Group. A global industrial gases provider, the company employs about 20,000 people and supplies compressed and bulk gases, chemicals and equipment. In fiscal 2005, BOC Gases achieved sales of approximately 5 billion.
