Earlier this year UCC Rowing Club purchased new Filippi Men’s Coxed Four and Coxless Pair racing boats. The Club Committee for 2008/09 decided to use this opportunity to recognise the valuable contribution made by two individuals to UCC Rowing.
Dr Brian O’Flaherty: Brian gave outstanding service to UCCRC as a coach in the 1990’s. This was possibly the most successful period in the club’s history and notable wins from his tenure include the Wylie cup victories of ’98 and ’99, the Men’s Novice 8+ Championship in ’98 and the Men’s Intermediate 8+ and Men’s Intermediate 4+ Championships in ’99. Brian also rowed for UCC and previously served as the Club President. The new 4+ will be given the name ‘Brian O’Flaherty’ in his honour.
Mr Liam Ryan: Liam is the owner of Ryan’s Supervalu in Grange, Glanmire and Togher. He has been extremely generous to UCCRC with sponsorship and support over the last number of years. He has also provided employment opportunities to rowers staying on in Cork during the summer to compete in the Irish National Championships. The new 2- will be given the name ‘Liam Ryan’ in his honour.
The naming ceremony and blessing for the boats took place at the Honan Plaza on September 23rd.
