Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Society for Oral Medicine
13.05.2009

UCC’s Dental School and Hospital will welcome the British Society for Oral Medicine (BSOM) from May 13th-15th for its Annual Scientific Meeting.
This is the first time that this conference is being hosted by UCC and is indeed only the second time that the BSOM is meeting outside the UK.

Oral Medicine is a dental speciality that lies at the interface between dentistry and medicine and is described by the BSOM as a “speciality of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of patients with chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region, and with their diagnosis and non-surgical management.”

Dr Christine McCreary, UCC’s Senior Lecturer/Consultant in Oral Medicine is convenor of the meeting, and will introduce guest speakers Professor Fergus Shanahan of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) in UCC and Dr Paula O’Leary, Consultant Clinical Immunologist.

Ninety-two delegates from Ireland, Britain, Nigeria, New Zealand, Italy and Kuwait, will attend scientific presentations on topics including innovations in oral cancer diagnosis and new measurements of dry mouth. A case presentation series will also be held during which patient cases of particular interest will be presented and discussed at the meeting.

The conference dinner will be held in Ballymaloe House, introducing delegates  to one of Cork’s culinary highlights.
