UCC's Classics Department hosts Ancient Novel Conference
22.08.2007

Exploring the reception of earlier Greek and Roman literature in the ancient novels and the way in which reception shapes the novels' content, structure and style is the subject for discussion at a KYKNOS conference to be held in UCC next week.

KYKNOS is the Swansea, Lampeter and Exeter Centre for Research in the Study of Ancient Narrative Literature.  The Centre aims to stimulate, co-ordinate and promote research on the narrative literature of ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Near, through collaborative work, conferences and publications as well as forming the centre of national and international networks of scholars in this field.

Titled "The Ancient Novel and its Reception of Earlier Literature", the conference, hosted by UCC's Classics Department, runs from Wednesday, August 29th to Friday, August 31st. Dr Konstantin Doulamis from the Classics Department explained: "The reception of the texts of ancient Greece and Rome in later literature and culture has emerged as an area of intense scholarly interest in recent years. The ancient Greek and Roman novels, rich in intertextuality and allusion, provide ample scope for the study of the reception of earlier literature in the narrative of the Empire."

Speakers include John Morgan, Tim Whitmarsh, Michael Paschalis and Costas Panayotakis.

The conference is funded by the UCC College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Science Conference Fund and UCC's Classics Department and takes place in the O'Rahilly Building, UCC, Room 2.55.
