UCC Student Wins Industry Microchip Design Award
13.09.2007

Kaveh Hosseini, a PhD student at University College Cork (UCC) and Tyndall National Institute, has been awarded the inaugural Outstanding Research Publication Award for doctoral students by the Microelectronic Industry Design Association (MIDAS Ireland).

Mr Hosseini invented a new type of microchip for wireless communications which can outperform the best products currently on the market.  The microchip is being manufactured in collaboration with Silicon and Software Systems.  The results of this research, which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, will be published in the leading international journal in the field.

MIDAS Ireland is a joint industry and academic organisation which defines the future direction of Integrated Circuit (microchip) design in Ireland.  Microchip design represents the top of the value pyramid in the electronics industry, with typical revenue per employee of €500,000.  With 1,500 microchip designers employed in 20 companies in Ireland, the industry is worth over €750M per annum in exports.

The future of the industry in Ireland depends critically on the supply of highly educated engineers generating novel ideas which can be sold globally.  MIDAS Ireland has sponsored the Outstanding Research Publication Award to promote excellence in innovation at the highest international level.
