UCC Law Faculty hosts e-Law Summer Institute
11.07.2007

From July 9th to August 3rd 2007, the Faculty of Law, UCC, in cooperation with Franklin Pierce Law Centre in New Hampshire, are hosting the third annual e-Law Summer Institute (eLSI).

This year Irish, French and Italian students are joined by students from Korea, French Guiana, Canada and, of course, the USA.  Staff from the Faculty of Law, UCC and from Franklin Pierce Law Center are teaching on the programme.

The Institute, which is accredited by the American Bar Association, focuses on the emerging policy and law of the information age and is designed to be a critical learning experience for the lawyer of the 21st century, who must have a much greater understanding and appreciation of the domestic and international aspects of this growing and evolving body of law.   Topics discussed include: regulation of the internet and cyber crime; data protection; protecting the online consumer; and the legal control of blogs, spam and phishing.

As well as addressing issues of law and policy of the information age, the Institute is at the fore in using information technology in the delivery of its courses.  For instance, students are provided with CDs of reading materials in advance of classes.  The Institute also includes asynchronous teaching modules whereby individual classes are pre-recorded and delivered on DVD or can be downloaded by Vodcast for viewing on computer or Video iPod.

Given Ireland's position as a key player in the Information Technology sector, the Law Faculty at UCC has developed considerable research and teaching expertise in the fields of e-Law and offers an LLM (Masters Degree) in eLaw.

At a reception, sponsored by the Southern Law Association and the Law Faculty at UCC, held to mark the third annual e-Law Institute, the President of the Southern Law Association, Mr Eamon Harrington, welcomed the students to Cork and wished them well in their studies.  The reception was attended by the Deputy President of UCC, Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, a number of High Court judges, as well as members of the local judiciary, the legal profession and the Law Faculty.
