06.09.2007

UCC's  Department of Epidemiology and Public Health hosts the joint meeting of the Society for Social Medicine and the International Epidemiological Association (European Federation) from September 12th-14th in UCC.
The Society for Social Medicine conference is the major UK/Irish annual scientific meeting in public health.  This is the first time this conference has been held in Cork and only the third time in Ireland in the 51 year history of the society.

Approximately 200 scientific papers spanning all major areas of public health practice and health services research will be presented over the three days of the conference.

Professor Ivan Perry, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health explained: "Public health is an important discipline focussed on the health and well-being of the population as a whole.  The mission of public health has been defined as 'the fulfilment of society's interest in ensuring the conditions in which people can be healthy'.  The essence of public health work is organised community efforts aimed at the prevention of disease and the promotion of health."

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Donal Counihan, will host a civic reception for delegates in the Glucksman Gallery on Wednesday, September 12th.  Minister Micheál Martin will also address the delegates reflecting on his leadership role in the introduction of the workplace smoking ban in Ireland in 2004.
