Transatlantic Studies Association Annual Conference at UCC

Over 130 speakers from all over Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia will gather at UCC next week (July 9th-12th) for the Transatlantic Studies Association's annual conference.
The multidisciplinary Association deals with a range of disciplines and subject areas including: History, International Relations, Literature, Culture, Race and Immigration, Economics and Urban Planning.  

The keynote lectures will be delivered by:

Professor Marilyn Young of New York University who will deliver a lecture on 'The Uses of Lawrence of Arabia and Counterinsurgency' on Monday, July 9th at 6pm in G01. Marilyn Young is Professor in the Department of History at New York University.  She has written and researched extensively on US foreign policy and US-Asian relations and most pertinently for this project is the author of The Vietnam Wars, 1945-1990 and Vietnam and America (with Marvin Gettleman, Jane Franklin and Bruce Franklin), and Reporting Vietnam: American Journalism, 1959-1975, two volumes.  The Vietnam Wars was recipient of the Berkshire Women's History Prize.

Professor Emory Elliot of the University of California, on 'Diversity in the United States and Abroad:  What Does It Mean when American Studies is Transnational?' on Wednesday, July 11th at 5pm in G01. Emory Elliott holds the position of University Professor for the University of California system and the rank of Distinguished Professor of English for the University of California, Riverside campus.  He is also the Director of the Center for Ideas and Society, a research center for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.  He has just completed his year as the President of the American Studies Association of the U.S. an organization of over 6000 members.


Professor Leopoldo Nuti, University Roma Tre, Italy on 'The recent past and the immediate future of Transatlantic military cooperation?' on Tuesday 10th at 11am in G01. Leopoldo Nuti is Professor of History of International Relations at the School of Political Science, University of Roma Tre. A graduate of the Universities of Florence (laurea), George Washington U. (M.A. in International affairs) and Rome (PhD in History of International relations), Professor Nuti has been a Fulbright student, NATO Research Fellow, Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute, Research Fellow at the CSIA, Harvard University, a Research Fellow for the Nuclear History Program, a Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, and a Visiting Professor at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris. With a number of other Italian cold war historians, he promoted the creation of the Machiavelli center for Cold War studies. He has published extensively on US foreign policy and security issues.
