Science Week 2007: Surrounded by Science!
08.11.2007

Science Week 2007 runs from November 11th-18th this year with "Surrounded by Science" as its main theme.

Science and engineering are the twin engines driving the modern world and this year Science Week Ireland explores this theme and illustrates just how much science surrounds us in every day life. Science Week is Ireland's biggest annual promotion of science to the general public. The week-long programme of events across Ireland each November aims to make science more interesting and accessible to children and adults alike.

Here in UCC, schools can participate in activities and workshops running throughout the week (see Calendar of Events 2007-08 at http://www.ucc.ie/sefs). The week ends on Friday, November 16th with Dr Declan Kennedy's legendary Chemistry Magic Show, sponsored by the Department of Chemistry, UCC and RDS Science Live initiative.  Admission is strictly ticket only (contact Anne Cronin Tel: 021 490 3299: Email annecronin@ucc.ie for details).

Beginning on Sunday, November 18th, and following on from Science Week, is the annual 'Discovery' exhibition, now in its third year. The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, UCC is one of the main sponsors of Discovery which is Munster's biggest interactive science and engineering exhibition. The exhibition runs from November 18th-21st, with more than 5000 students booked to attend the event.

For the first time this year Discovery will host a Family Day in City Hall on Sunday, November 18th, from 3-6 pm.  This is an opportunity for all the family to enjoy the exhibition. At the Family Day, expect to be entertained as well as educated, with the following special guests:
The Bubbleman investigates the science behind soap films by blowing bubbles of all shapes and sizes, filling them with smoke and magically getting them to hover in mid air. The show covers simple molecular forces, surface tension, light, colour, density, volume and shapes. Washing up will never be the same again!

Also appearing are the Mad Scientists of Cork Community Circus. Normally pent up in the lab under controlled conditions, these unconventional scientists cause havoc and hilarity as visitors to the exhibition become part of the experiment.

Note: numbers in City Hall are limited for health and safety reasons. Admission €5 per family.
