Memorial Scholarships launched at Presentation of UCC Sports Scholarships 2007/2008
05.11.2007

Two UCC sporting heroes will be honoured today (Monday, November 5th 2007) when Memorial Scholarships in their memory are launched.  UCC students, Jason Foley and Jonathan Herlihy, who died tragically, were at the pinnacle of their sporting careers when they lost their lives.

The Memorial Scholarships will be launched at a ceremony to announce details of UCC's annual Sports Scholarships.  Some 97 students received their Scholarship awards from the University's Acting University Secretary, Michael Farrell.

The Jason Foley Memorial Scholarship is in honour of the memory of Jason Foley who died on the basketball court of sudden cardiac death syndrome while playing for his local club Glenmary BC, Midleton.  Jason was a Commerce Student at the time of his death.  The inaugural recipient of the Jason Foley Memorial Scholarship is David Murphy for Basketball - UCC and UCC Demons.  The Scholarship will be presented by members of Jason's family and The Jason Foley Fundraising Committee.

The Jonathan Herlihy Memorial Scholarship honours the memory of Jonathan Herlihy who drowned tragically last year while attempting to save two others from drowning.  The Jonathan Herlihy Memorial Scholarship is being awarded to First Year Commerce student, William Kearney from Glanmire.  William plays his Club hurling and football with Sarsfields and Glanmire Club, one of Jonathan's sporting clubs. The scholarship will be presented by members of Jonathan's family and The Jonathan Herlihy Fundraising Committee.

This year, scholarships are being awarded in 21 sport disciplines with Racquetball being honoured for the first time.  Other sports include Rowing, Handball, Ladies Gaelic Football, Tae-kwon-do, Sailing, Swimming, Badminton, Rugby, Tennis, Ladies Soccer, Ladies Rugby, Kickboxing, Soccer, Hurling, Golf, Ladies Hockey, Gaelic Football, Camogie, Basketball and Athletics.

The success of the Badminton Club last year is reflected in three students being awarded Badminton Scholarships this year. The emergence of the Martial Arts and Indoor Clubs reflects the success of the Mardyke Arena Sports centre which was built six years ago.  The indoor clubs are now attracting top class athletes because of the magnificent facilities available.

The success of the Ladies Hockey Club in retaining the Chilean Cup recently is reflected in six students receiving hockey scholarships.  The Ladies Hockey Club has attracted senior internationals Julie O'Halloran and Hollie Moffett to join the panel this year along with existing internationals Áine Connery and Ali O'Connor.

Other students to be honoured this year include Marie Breen - UCC Basketball and Team Montenotte, Glanmire.  Marie received her first Irish Senior Caps over the summer.

The GAA winners include All Ireland Cork u21 Gaelic Footballers Michael Shields, Fintan Goold, Eoin Cotter, Ken O'Halloran, David Kearney and David Limrick, while Watergrasshill Hurling sensation of the year John Halbert is also honoured, along with Shane O'Neill and All Ireland Medal winner for Kilkenny, Donnchadh Cody.

The value of a Sports Scholarship ranges between €500 and €2,000.  Over 400 applications for scholarships were received with 150 students interviewed and 97 scholarships awarded. The Scholarships are primarily funded by the Department of Physical Education & Sport and this year a number of local businesses have come on board and the University is indebted to them for their support:
Richard Pratt Holdings Scholarship - Anthony Nash, Hurling - Cork and Kanturk
EMC Scholarship - Kevin Hartnett, Hurling - Cork Seniors and Russell Rovers
Liam Martin Electrical, Douglas Scholarships - Stephen Moylan - Douglas and Cork U21 and David Kearney - Gaelic Football - Nemo Rangers and Cork U21.

Cadbury Ireland is also continuing their sponsorship of aspiring U21 Gaelic Footballers in addition to their sponsorship of the All Ireland U21 Series.  This year the Cadbury Scholarship is awarded to:  Eoin Cotter - Cork U21 and Douglas and Daithí Ó Sé - Kerry U21 and An Gaeltacht.

Organised by UCC's Department of Physical Education & Sport, the Presentation of Scholarships takes place this evening (November 5th 2007) at 6pm in the Multifunctional Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn, UCC.
