John C. Kelleher Family Business Centre hosts Workshop
22.11.2007

The John C. Kelleher Family Business Centre, UCC will host a Family Business Network Ireland event on Wednesday, December 12th 2007 at 6.30pm in the Council Room at UCC.
The event will be of a workshop format and is titled "Managing our friends/family in a work context: the boundary between the personal and professional." Dr Anthony Montgomery of the Applied Psychology Department, UCC will present the workshop.

In the workshop, Dr Montgomery will focus on the challenge of managing family and friends in a business context.  The aim is to provide participants with skills to deal with the successful management and cooperation of colleagues who are family and friends and strategies to deal with communication breakdowns that are fuelled by non-professional issues.

According to Dr Montgomery, working with family members or friends who have different expectations with regard to efficiency and equity means that the management of relationships at the workplace can be complex and can unnecessarily hinder operational goals.  Dr Montgomery suggests that such role confusion can present challenges in terms of how one manages the boundaries between the personal and professional.

Dr Montgomery is an organisational psychologist in UCC.  Prior to joining UCC, Dr Montgomery held the position of Senior Lecturer in the Behavioural Sciences and Management at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain.  Since 1999, he has successfully combined the roles of organisational consultant and academic.  His portfolio of clients has included both public and private organisations.

Dr Joan Buckley, Director of the John C. Kelleher Family Business Centre, said: "We are very pleased to have somebody of Dr Montgomery's calibre to give this workshop. Many of the underlying difficulties in family businesses come from the dilemmas associated with mixing work and family relationships. I believe that Anthony will have some very useful insights to offer on this matter."

Places for the workshop are limited.  A fee of €30 per person applies to non-FBN Ireland members.  If you wish to attend please email familybusiness@ucc.ie or telephone 021 4892768.
