IT Building Technology the way forward - UCC Conference
19.09.2007

How Information Technology (IT) can make buildings smarter was among the topics for discussion at the recent colloquium on "Innovation in Construction" hosted by UCC's Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
UCC's campus proved to be the ideal location for the colloquium according to Jim Lawler, Director of Industrial Technologies and Commercialisation, Enterprise Ireland when he and representatives from industry, academia and Governmental organisations gathered to discuss the impact of IT on innovation in construction and the enormous potential for industry-led research in the construction sector in Ireland.

The audience of UCC's "First Colloquium on Innovation in Construction" learned about the socio-economic aspects of the latest developments in Switzerland. Presentations on new types of wireless sensors, including software for indoor positioning, were presented by researchers from Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Tyndall National Institute. Speakers from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, UCC's Environmental Research Institute (ERI) and the Cork Centre for Architectural Education demonstrated applications which could support ageing people in their homes and contribute to improved building monitoring. Presentations from the BAUHAUS University in Weimar, Germany and UCC's Constraint Computation Centre clearly illustrated the need and potentials for process-oriented, cross-disciplinary information management and decision support in Architecture, Engineering and Construction.

The 30 participants from the Irish construction sector shared the view of John Bowen, CEO of the Bowen group, who said: "The rewards for Ireland in being at the forefront of construction technology are potentially enormous."

UCC's Chair for Information Technology in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction, Professor Karsten Menzel, summarised the Colloquium by pointing out, that the 15 participants from abroad, including Switzerland, Germany, the USA, UK and Northern Ireland, demonstrated that the "Cork Research Cluster" focusing on Smart, Carbon Neutral Buildings has developed a critical mass to attract joint research and development projects on international scale. Professor Karl Beucke, VP for Research at Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany left Cork by saying: "The demonstrated capabilities for interdisciplinary research in Information Technology in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction exceeded all my expectations."
