Historic UCC/CIT Conferring
22.10.2007

Friday, October 19th 2007 was an historic day for University College Cork (UCC) and the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) as sixteen graduates received their MSc in Biomedical Science parchments in a joint awards ceremony.

This was the first occasion on which both institutions had come together for such a ceremony. UCC and CIT were part of a consortium that included the joint awarding bodies, the National University of Ireland (NUI) and the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC).

The ceremony, attended by UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy and the President of CIT, Dr Brendan Murphy, marked a new departure in cooperation between the two bodies, the UCC President said, adding: "Today's joint award ceremony offers proof in a most tangible way that at its core, the mission of both organisations is the same  - that is, to be a powerful force together in the region for growth and development and to discharge to the highest standards our responsibility to educate our young people so that they can become part of  the new knowledge-based Ireland. Of course, our two institutions have always enjoyed a very close relationship and I think today's joint ceremony is a pointer to even greater cooperation in the future."

The CIT President, Dr Brendan Murphy, said the joint conferring, while historic in its own right, marked a maturing of the relationship between CIT and UCC: "We are confident in our diverse autonomy and mission, and therein lies the strength of our future cooperation which we hope to expand and diversify for the good of the people of the region and country generally," he added.

In all, more than 1000 students were conferred at CIT during day-long ceremonies.
