Bridging the Gap 2007 Showcase
Over 700 Cork city primary school pupils will participate in the annual
Bridging the Gap showcase on June 6th and 7th at the Devere Hall, Aras
na Mac Leinn, UCC. The pupils, aged five to twelve, have been involved
in music, drama, mime, science, law and art projects funded by Bridging
the Gap. "The aim of the event is to showcase the children's
talents and to give them a platform for celebration in addition to
forging closer links with UCC and the schools involved" explained Dr
Tracey Connolly, Project Manager, Bridging the Gap.
Bridging the Gap was set up at UCC in 2001. It works closely on a
needs-led basis with 47 primary and post-primary schools in Cork city
and also collaborates with other local and national agencies working in
these communities, and as the project name implies, its aim is to break
down perceived barriers to education and enhance educational
opportunities.
The scheme has been proactive in bringing both pupils and their parents
to the university and throughout the years it has been responsible for
thousands of visitors to UCC thus enabling the young pupils to get a
feel for what the university is about. A large number of UCC staff and
students support Bridging the Gap by providing their expertise to the
schools.
Bridging the Gap organises professional development for teachers,
networking between schools engaged in various initiatives and
disseminates models of best practice. Through research, it conducts
needs analysis in the local areas to promote greater collaboration and
local ownership of the initiatives as they are identified and brought
to maturity.
The showcasing events will take place at The Devere Hall, Aras na Mac
Leinn, UCC on Wednesday, June 6th at 9.30am and 11.30am and Thursday,
June 7th at 10am.
