Mothering Issues to be addressed at UCC Conference, June 9th
"Mothering in Contemporary Ireland: Issues, Images and Actions"
is the title of a conference taking place in UCC on Saturday, June
9th. Hosted by UCC's Board of Women's Studies, the conference
which also sees the launch of an Irish branch of the Association for
Research on Mothering (ARM), kicks off with Registration at 9.30am
followed by Poetry with Liz Willows. Dr Andrea O'Reilly, Associate
Professor, School of Women's Studies at York University, Toronto will
deliver the keynote address at 10.30am.
Patricia Kennedy, Senior Lecturer in Social Policy, UCD commences
Session I at 11.45am with a talk titled "Woman-centered Childbirth in
the North East of Ireland" followed by Clare Boyle whose topic is
"Breastfeeding in Ireland - Teaching the Converted".
The final contributor for Session I is Clare O'Hagan from UL whose talk
is titled "The Elephant in the Corner: the influence of normative
constructions of motherhood on working mothers in Ireland".
Session II commences with Hazel O'Brien, UCD who will deliver a talk
"Living in the Shadow of a Marriage: the effects of divorce on lesbian
parents and their children" whilst Session III will feature Anna
Kingston from UCC who will talk about "Becoming Resilient Agents:
Exploring the lives of Mothers of Children with Special Needs".
Niamh Hehir from UL starts Session IV with her talk "Remote Madonnas,
Caves and Wrenching Meditations: Representations of Maternity, and
Jouissance as Inspiration in Medbh McGuckian's The Book of the
Angel. The final talk will be delivered by Barbara Dunne from
Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology who will discuss the subject
"Mother Mary; Representations of the Black Madonna in Ireland".
The Conference which will be held in Room 123, O'Rahilly Building, UCC,
closes with a plenary session at 4.20pm. Members of the public
are invited to attend the conference and admission is free.
Prior to the conference on June 9th, the Board of Women's Studies at
UCC and Jessica Kingsley Publishers will celebrate the publication of
"Mothering Special Needs - A Different Maternal Journey" by Anna Karin
Kingston (a book that explores the lived experience of mothers raising
a child with a learning disability). The book will be launched by
Frieda Finlay on Friday, June 8th at 8pm in the Glucksman Restaurant,
UCC.
