Codes and Cryptography - UCC Workshop

You pick up one of your audio CDs and notice a scratch on the surface - but then it plays perfectly. You make a telephone call to Australia and get a perfectly clear line, free of all the clicks and static that used to be there.  You book your holiday on-line giving your credit card number safe in the knowledge that the airline's website is secure from intruders or send sensitive business information electronically that can't be intercepted. The codes that make all these possible will be discussed at a workshop titled "The Claude Shannon Workshop on Coding & Cryptography" at UCC on 21 and 22 May 2007.

The 2-day workshop will bring together speakers and participants from the Australia, France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK as well as Ireland to discuss their latest research on how to make information storage and transmission more reliable and more secure. The workshop will divide its work between theoretical studies carried out by mathematicians, and practical implementations in microelectronic circuits designed by electrical and electronic engineers.  According to Co-Director of the Boole Centre, Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick: "Codes are essential to modern communications and information storage. The public demands high fidelity audio and DVD, telephone and TV signals, and a high level of security in electronic business transactions. Our codes form the basis for doing that."

The workshop takes place in UCC's Kane Building and is hosted by The Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI), the School of Mathematical Sciences and the Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Microelectronic Engineering, UCC and is sponsored by the Claude Shannon Institute for Discrete Mathematics, Coding & Cryptography. There is no registration fee.  If you would like to attend please contact: Niamh Power, BCRI, Tel. 021 4903697 or n.power@bcri.ucc.ie.
