Publication by UCC academics examines social movement activity in Ireland

Social Movements and Ireland is an innovative new text which aims to provide a comprehensive introduction and critical analysis of collective action in Irish society. Participation in social protest in Ireland has become a widely utilized form of political expression and has played a profoundly important role in generating the wide-ranging cultural, political, social and economic changes which have shaped Irish society in the twentieth and twenty-first century.

The book, which is edited by UCC academics, Linda Connolly and Niamh Hourigan, and published by Manchester University Press, combines a broad overview of social movement activity in Ireland with an integrated introduction to the major theoretical forms of social movement analysis, and is ideally suited to the needs of students from a wide range of disciplines.

Each chapter of the book is based on original research conducted by experienced scholars. These comprehensive studies are combined with analysis which systematically relates the activities of these movements to international theoretical debates about new social movements, including European and American approaches. By adopting an integrated approach, this landmark text provides new perspectives on international social movements theory, based on the Irish experience. At the same time, a distinct account of the development of Irish society and ongoing social change is provided through the focus on substantive questions - gender, civil rights, rural development, consumerism, environmentalism, language, sectarianism, sexuality, war, globalization, racism, ethnicity and immigration.

Social Movements and Ireland will be of importance to students and scholars attempting to understand a society in the throes of radical change and to evaluate what these changes mean in the context of global debates about the impact of social protest.

Linda Connolly is Head of Department and Senior Lecturer in Sociology at University College Cork. Niamh Hourigan is Lecturer in Sociology at University College Cork.

'Social Movements and Ireland' will be launched by Dr Ciaran McCullagh, Department of Sociology, UCC at a reception to open the Sociological Association of Ireland (SAI) conference, at 9.30pm in the Castletroy Hotel, Limerick on Friday next, 11 May.
