Salters' Festival of Chemistry at University College Cork (UCC)

72 students from 12 schools are today (9 May 2007) enjoying an interesting fun-filled day of chemistry at the Salters' Festival of Chemistry at UCC . Each school is represented by a team of four 11-13 year olds.

During the morning the teams will take part in a competitive, hands-on, practical activity, "A Salty Tale" in which they will use their analytical chemistry skills.  In the afternoon, they will compete in the "University Challenge", a practical activity chosen by the University, in which they will be required to determine the acidity of a series of solutions which the lab technician neglected to label.  Dr Declan Kennedy will also present his now famous Chemistry Magic Show to the students.

The day will end with a Prizegiving Ceremony at which all participants will be given individual fun prizes and participation certificates and the winning teams will be awarded cash prizes for their schools.

Dr JJ Keating welcomed the students to UCC.  "UCC is delighted to be associated with this festival.  This fun event provides a platform to encourage pupils to consider a career in chemistry and to highlight that chemistry is a fun subject with many practical applications."

Participating schools include:  Abbeyfeale Vocational School, Limerick; Ashton School, Cork, Ballincollig Community School, Cork, Clonakilty Community College, Co. Cork; Colaiste na Toirbhite, Bandon, Co. Cork; Maria Immaculate Community College, Dunmanway, Co. Cork; Mayfield Community School, Cork; North Presentation School, Farranree, Cork; Pobailscoil na Trionoide, Youghal, Co. Cork; St Ailbe's Secondary School, Tipperary; St Angela's Secondary School, Waterford; St Vincent's Secondary School, Cork.

The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry are an initiative of The Salters' Institute, whose aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. The Festival at UCC is one of a series of 55 Festivals taking place at Universities throughout Ireland and the UK between March and June 2007.

The Institute is pleased that the Royal Society of Chemistry is again working in partnership with it this year.

Cash prizes for the winning schools totalling £350 are awarded at each Festival and all participants receive fun prizes and certificates.   During the last six years over 15,500 students have experienced the fun of practical chemistry through the Salters' Festivals of Chemistry.
