Eminent Academic addresses Southern Radiological Society Meeting

The Annual Invited Lecture of the Southern Radiological Society took place on 31 March in Cork. The lecture titled "Radiology and Sport" was delivered by Professor Adrian K. Dixon, Professor of Radiology at Cambridge University.

In his lecture, Professor Dixon described the role radiology has played in the diagnosis and management of sports injuries, since radiology first developed as a medical sub-speciality. The lecture demonstrated how this role has expanded in recent years, particularly with the significant improvements in musculoskeletal Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The meeting was organised by Dr Max F. Ryan (Southern Radiological Society) in collaboration with Professor Michael Maher and Ms Anne Fitzpatrick, Department of Radiology, UCC. There was an excellent attendance at the lecture, including consultants, specialist registrars and retired consultants from the Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital, South Infirmary University Hospital and Bons Secours Hospitals. Professor Dixon's lecture was enthusiastically received by all in attendance. The invited lecture was followed by the Annual Dinner of the Southern Radiological Society which was held at Fleming's Restaurant in Tivoli.

The Southern Radiology Society is a society of consultant radiologists, specialist registrars in radiology and retired consultants, based in the Munster region which has been in existence since the 1980's. The society was formed to promote education in radiology in the Munster Region. It also represents a forum at which new developments in radiology are discussed, and where collaborations in research and collegiality between radiologists at the hospitals in the region are fostered. The Southern Radiological Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC.
