World leaders in Coastal Governance convene in UCC
For many decades scientists have endeavoured to understand changes in
the biology, chemistry and physics of the coastal zone. In more recent
years, research has expanded to incorporate human dimensions, to
improve our understanding of the role of society in changing coastal
environments. This is particularly pertinent in the current day, which
is influenced by increasing concerns about the vulnerability of coastal
communities to sea level rise, erosion, and storminess as a consequence
of climate change.
LOICZ is a major international scientific programme which has taken
this message on board. World leaders in coastal governance are
convening in UCC this week (30 April) to focus on the interactions
between man and nature with specific reference to the coastal zone.
The meeting is being hosted by UCC's Coastal and Marine Resources
Centre (CMRC). Valerie Cummins, Director of the Centre is enthusiastic
about welcoming internationally renowned experts from North America
(Miami, Hawaii and New England) and Europe (German, Holland, Ireland)
to UCC for the meeting.
The meeting is being chaired by Professor Stephen Olsen, Rhode Island
University who conducts much of his research in Latin America, where
the issue of governance in the coastal zone is made challenging by
unstable political climates. Cdr Mark Mellett from the Irish Naval
Service, will participate from the National Maritime College of
Ireland. Cdr. Mellett' experience of patrolling the Irish territorial
area, which is one of the most significant maritime jurisdictions in
Europe, will be an important contribution to the proceedings.
