Minister for Foreign Affairs launches University College Cork (UCC) degree
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern TD today (25 April 2007)
launched UCC's Bachelor of Commerce (International) degree with Chinese
Studies, French, Hispanic Studies, German, Irish and Italian at the
National University of Ireland (NUI).
Formerly known as the Bachelor of Commerce (European) degree this UCC
programme has been significantly enhanced by extending third year study
abroad opportunities for students to The People's Republic of China,
Canada and the United Mexican States in addition to existing partner
countries Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Scotland.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister said "This programme offers
wonderful opportunities for students to broaden their skills, see at
first hand the business environment in other countries, and study and
learn at the cutting edge of commerce in an international environment.
UCC is to be congratulated in their vision in expanding this very
valuable course."
Currently, there are 270 students enrolled on the degree of which 70
are studying at UCC's partner universities abroad in any academic year
leading to highly ranked employment opportunities. UCC's
Registrar and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Professor Paul
Giller explained "It is anticipated that in welcoming our new partner
countries this number will grow to about 400 students on the programme
in time." He went on "Studying abroad for the third year of the degree
in the business schools of leading universities whilst immersed
in the culture and language of our partner countries is a strategic
element of preparation of the student for a successful career in
international business. The introduction of partnerships with The
People's Republic of China, Canada and the United Mexican States
enhances the range of opportunity and cultural exposure available to
our students and strengthens our ability to offer corresponding
visiting studentships with each country. The result is a truly
international business degree which builds partnership and
understanding on a global scale."
He added: " Today's launch acknowledges the major contribution that
European partner countries have made, and will continue to make, to the
success of students on the Bachelor of Commerce (International) whilst
also welcoming our new partners on a global basis."
John Coleman, Head of UCC's College of Business and Law said ""Global
business requires globally confident and linguistically able graduates.
My experience of product launch and international selling across
different continents has clearly demonstrated the demand for the type
of graduates the BComm International produces."
