Students WISE up at University College Cork (UCC)

More than 300 female students attended the two-day Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Programme held at UCC on Thursday and Friday, 19 and 20 April 2007.  Dr Ruth Davis, Research Support Officer, UCC opened the two-programme which was attended by students from most counties in Ireland.

The objective of the WISE programme is to encourage more female students in transition year and fifth year to consider careers in Engineering, and the Mathematical, Physical and Chemical Sciences.

Students participated in dynamic workshops which highlighted the role of engineering in everyday life and provided an overview of the three degree programmes offered by UCC - Process and Chemical, Civil and Environmental, and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.  The comprehensive programme also included presentations on Chemistry, Physics and Mathematical Sciences.
Dr Geraldine Boylan, Senior Lecturer, UCC closed the programme and spoke about her recent work which aims to create a synergy between Medicine and Engineering using the skills and techniques of engineering signal processing research to address important medical problems.

This event also coincided with the Open Day for Schools giving the WISE participants an extra opportunity to visit information stands and presentations of their choice.

The WISE Programme was organised by the Admissions Office, UCC and continues to be sponsored by Intel Ireland Limited.
