Launch of three new China Programmes at University College Cork (UCC)

UCC today (28 March 2007) announced the launch of three new China related programmes: Bachelor in Commerce (International) with Chinese; Higher Diploma in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business, and Master of Arts Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business.

UCC Registrar and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Professor Paul Giller, launching these new programmes said  "China, the emerging economic superpower of the twenty-first century, has attracted the attention of Ireland and of UCC. Over the past 4-5 years, we have established academic links with Chinese universities that have led to a rapid increase in the number of Chinese students studying at UCC. The goal of these new programmes, together with the BA programme in Chinese Studies, is to promote mutual understanding and respect between the Irish and the Chinese; and to produce Irish business-people, politicians, diplomats, educators and researchers with expertise on China for intercultural, and for Irish economic, development."

The Institute of Chinese Studies at UCC was established in June 2006 in response to the growing demand for graduates with an understanding of modern China.  Professor Fan Hong, Director of the Institute, explained "The original idea of the Institute was developed by the Irish Government in acknowledgement of the growing integration of China with the wider world, coupled with a strong desire for Ireland to play a leading role in this process. With the establishment of these new programmes, UCC is set to become a leading centre for high-profile teaching and research in contemporary China."

A Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies programme commenced in September 2006 and has currently 44 Irish and European students.  Applications are now invited for the Bachelor of Commerce (International) with Chinese Studies, Higher Diploma in Contemporary Chinese Business and Culture, and Master of Arts Contemporary Chinese Business and Culture.

The launch of the new programmes takes place today (28 March 2007) at 1.00pm in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, UCC.
