Future Directions for Youth Work in Ireland - UCC Seminar
Over the past decade Ireland has undergone considerable economic,
social and structural change. These changes have had a
significant impact on youth work, which has become increasingly
regulated through planning, legislation, and professionalisation.
Consequently, the emphasis of youth work has shifted to specialized
provision, a growing demand in the sector for qualified youth workers
and an associated concern for the position of volunteers.
Questions arise as to whether youth work can remain true to its
philosophy and whether as a discipline it can adequately meet the needs
of young people in the future. These issues will be addressed at
a seminar in UCC on Tuesday, 3 April. Hosted by the BSocSc (Youth and
Community Work) Course Team at UCC's Department of Applied Social
Studies, the seminar titled "Directions in Youth Work in Ireland -
Policy and Practice" will ask if the values and identity of youth work
can be maintained in this changing society.
Speakers include: Dr Mark K. Smith, Rank Research Fellow and Tutor,
YMCA George Williams and Visiting Professor in Community Education,
University of Strathclyde; Ms Mary Cunningham, National Youth Council
of Ireland; Diarmuid Kearney, Youth Work Ireland and Dr Maurice Devlin,
NUI Maynooth.
The seminar takes place on Tuesday, 3 April from 10am-4pm in Devere
Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn, UCC. For details and booking forms, please
contact Dr Catherine Forde, Department of Applied Social Studies at
021-4902450 or Michael Ó hAodáin, Department of Applied Social Studies
at 021-4903753.
