UCC's Centre for Adult Continuing Education hosts Open Evening, 28 March



As part of the Cork Festival for Lifelong Learning, the Centre for Adult Continuing Education, UCC will host an 'Open Evening' on Wednesday, 28 March, 5.30-8.30pm in Devere Hall, UCC during which their Programme Guide will be launched by Emeritus Professor John A. Murphy. This Open Evening is an information-giving session open to the general public and all are welcome.

The Centre has a range of courses to suit everybody's needs. Courses with a specific community focus include: Certificate/Diploma courses in Community Education, Social Studies, Disability Studies, Community Based Guidance and Support Studies. Diplomas with a more professional focus for those interested in up-skilling in their current area or changing career might be interested in the such courses as the following Diplomas: Food Retailing; Construction Studies; Supply Chain Management; Safety, Health and Welfare at Work. Other areas of specialisation include Parent Mentoring, the Psychology of Adolescent Behaviour and Social and Personal Health Psychology.

The Centre also offers a range of specialised courses including Diploma courses in Geology, Women's Studies, Youth and Community Work, Applied Multimedia; Biodiversity Components of Forestry as well as Certificate courses in Irish Archaeology and Music. Other special interest Diplomas include: the Diploma in European Art History; Local and Regional Studies; Environmental Science and Social Policy, and more recently, the Diploma in the Psychology of Criminal Behaviour.

As well as these, the Centre for Adult Continuing Education offers a suite of short-courses. These are non-accredited, special interest short 6-8 week courses. Such courses include: Comedy in the Writings of Flann O'Brien, Samuel Beckett and Patrick McGinley; Astronomy; History and Politics; A Little History of Irish Food; Applied Digital Photography; Art in the City of Rome; Exploring Democracy; Fiction First; Cork's Architectural Heritage;  Leadership and Conflict Resolution; Employment Law and Painting Mosaics: Manuscripts and Stained Glass. These courses change from year to year, depending on uptake, interest and the demand for such courses. Again, these courses tend to be able to appeal to a wide range of interests, and there is no assessment procedure involved as these particular courses are non-accredited.

At this is an Open Evening, the Centre will have representatives to speak on all the courses it offers to interested potential mature students about the course content and all it entails. The Mature Student Officer will be available for general queries as well as Oscail (distance learning education and degrees).

This Open Evening is open everyone and admission is free. Light refreshments will also be served.
