Public debate on the French presidential election 2007

UCC's Departments of Government and French will host a public debate on the French presidential election 2007 on Wednesday, 28 March in Kane G1, UCC at 6.30 pm.  Titled "France after Chirac: the 2007 presidential election", the debate will provide a forum for discussion on the forthcoming presidential election in France.

The panel of speakers, drawn from both the academic and bureaucratic fields, are renowned experts in their own particular areas concerning the French system and include:

  • Professor Patrick O'Donovan (French Department, UCC)
  • Michel Azaria (Institut supérieur du commerce, Paris)
  • Ted BikinKita (Government Department, UCC)
  • Emmanuelle Schön (IRCHSS scholar, Politics Department, UCD)
  • French Embassy diplomats
A number of issues will be addressed, including: where France stands after the era of Chirac; who will win the election: Sarkozy, Royal, Bayrou, or possibly an outsider?; how will the Front National under Jean-Marie Le Pen fare this time round; what will be the impact for France of a victory for the left, right or centre?; will the winner be able to carry through a majority in the parliamentary elections?

This is a public lecture open to all, and due time will be given to a questions and answers session, where the panel will field questions from the audience.
