Launch of Bridging the Gap 2006 Report, 20 March
"Bridging the Gap shows what can be achieved when there is a strong
partnership between the university and the community and when the
university offers its expert resources to support schools and
communities in achieving their goals" said UCC President, Dr Michael
Murphy at the launch of the 2006 Bridging the Gap evaluation report on
Tuesday, 20 March 2007. The report compiled by Cynthia Deane of Options
Consulting measures the impact Bridging the Gap' initiatives and deals
extensively with 'looking to the future' in furthering the work of
Bridging the Gap in educational inclusion.
Based at UCC, Bridging the Gap works with 47 schools in Cork city with
the aim of creating opportunities for greater educational inclusion.
Bridging the Gap is engaged with schools in setting and monitoring
goals, researching outcomes and sharing models of good practice.
Through the vision of Professor Aine Hyland, former Vice-President and
Professor of Education at UCC, Bridging the Gap was established in
2001. Speaking at the launch Prof. Hyland said that 'Bridging the Gap
reflects best practice in social and educational inclusion measures, as
identified nationally and internationally'.
Project Manager, Dr Tracey Connolly stated that the development of
Bridging the Gap would not have been possible without the commitment
and expertise of the teachers and principals who embraced Bridging the
Gap from the outset in taking a community approach to educational
inclusion and who have continually kept high expectations in promoting
achievement for all pupils in their schools.
