UCC Students to represent Ireland at US Conference
UCC and Ireland will be represented at the International Model United
Nations Conference by a delegation from UCC's International Relations
Society. The conference, which runs from 18-22 March in the
United Nations headquarters in New York, is the largest conference of
its kind in the world. Students from countries as diverse as
Egypt, the United Kingdom, China, Kazachstan, Ecuador and Bahrain are
expected to attend.
Last year, when Ireland was first represented at this conference, Irish
delegates distinguished themselves and this year the university will be
dispatching its largest delegation yet. Students will display skills of
negotiation, lobbying and diplomacy whilst representing Ireland on an
international stage during the four-day competition.
International Relations Society's Auditor and Head Delegate, Muireann
Mangan. said "the International Model United Nations is a hugely
prestigious event which puts students right at the centre of
policy-making debate in the diplomatic arena. Delegates have been
preparing for the last six months writing conference position papers
and researching their committee topics. I have no doubt that the Irish
delegation will excel in this prestigious, world-famous competition."
The UCC International Relations Society, whose membership numbers 300,
will host a public presentation evening to unveil themes under discussion
and strategies for success. Topics range from the
Iranian nuclear programme, to global terrorism, to the threat of
climate change.
The presentation will take place in West Wing 5, UCC, at 7.30pm on
Monday, 12 March. Members of the public are invited to attend.
The Society gratefully acknowledges sponsorship from the Bank of Ireland.
