Proud Day for UCC Students and Graduates at Annual Prizegiving Ceremony
UCC's top graduate is Séamus Ó Ceallaigh. The Graduate of the
Year was announced at the 2006 Prizegiving Ceremony at UCC on 26
February 2007 at which 44 undergraduate and postgraduate prizes were
presented to over 54 prizewinners by Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC.
An outstanding student from Melbourn, Bishopstown, Cork, Séamus Ó
Ceallaigh graduated with a first-class Honours BSc in Physical and
Mathematical Sciences in 2006. He was awarded an Entrance Scholarship
in 2001 and held the title of College Scholar in 2003 and
2004. Throughout his undergraduate career, Séamus played a key
role in the Mathematical Society, the Philosophical Society, and the
Students' Union where he held the post of Deputy President/Education
Officer in 2004/2005. As a member of the UCC Mathematical
Society, Séamus was part of the winning team in 2004 which was judged
one of the six "outstanding" entries from over 600 teams across the
globe. He was also the recipient of a Bene Merenti award by the
UCC Societies Guild in 2004 for his work as auditor of the Mathematical
Society. His other interests included membership of the Law
Society and An Chuallacht.
The Graduate of the Year Award is given annually to the most
distinguished student of the year. In making this award, both
academic distinctions and the part played in the public life of the
University are taken into consideration. In accepting the
'Graduate of the Year Award' Séamus said "I am deeply honoured to
accept this award and proud to be a graduate of UCC where I formed
enduring friendships and benefited so much from my participation in all
aspects of campus life. I feel I have been fortunate to get the
opportunities that UCC, and my family, have given me." Séamus is
currently pursuing an MSc in Applied Mathematics having been awarded an
Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology Research
Scholarship. He was also awarded one of the coveted Peel Memorial
Prizes.
The John Joseph McCarthy Prize in Civil and Environmental Engineering
Prize is being awarded for the first time this year. The prize is
awarded to a final year student of Civil and Environmental Engineering
who has contributed significantly to sport in UCC. John
McCarthy, BE who is MD of John McCarthy and Partners has generously
offered the annual prize in memory of his late father, John Joseph
McCarthy. The recipient is Dana Kelleher from Clogheen, Cork.
Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC, presented the awards at today's
prizegiving and congratulated the prizewinners for their hard work,
dedication to their studies and their excellence in academic
scholarship. He also offered his congratulations to their parents
for the support they have provided and continue to provide. In
his speech, he referred to the education experience at UCC and said
"Our ambition here in UCC is that our students and graduates will be
our best ambassadors in society."
