China - Life in the Middle Kingdom - Public Lecture Series
"China Today", "Travelling in China", "Women in China Today and
Yesterday" are among the topics of a public lecture series on China
taking place in February and March 2007 in the Central Library, Grand
Parade. The series will be launched on Tuesday, 13 February to
coincide with the Chinese New Year celebrations. In attendance at the
launch will be the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Michael Ahern, the Chinese
Ambassador Mr Zhang Xinsen and UCC President, Professor Michael Murphy.
Hosted by Cork City Libraries and Irish Institute of Chinese Studies at
UCC, the lecture series will run in the Central Library at 7.30pm each
Tuesday beginning with the first lecture on 13 February titled "China:
A New Year, A New Dawn - Chinese Customs and Religion" by Professor Fan
Hong.
Emma Connolly will speak on "Travelling in China" on 20 February
followed by Dr Wang Jianhui with a talk titled "Chinese Medicine" on 27
February. The title of Dr Huan Xiong's talk on 6 March is "Women
in China Today and Yesterday."
On 13 March Dr Jorn-Carsten Gottward will speak on "China Today".
Professor Fan Hong's second talk which takes place on 20 March is
titled "The Window of China: Beijing Olympic Games" and the series will
conclude on 27 March with Mrs Shih Cheng-Hung who will speak on
"Chinese Cuisine".
The Institute of Chinese Studies at UCC was established in June 2006 in
response to the growing demand for graduates with an understanding of
modern China. The Institute under its Director, Professor Fan Hong,
offers Chinese Studies as one of the range of subjects of the BA degree
in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences at UCC.
There are currently 46 students in the Chinese Studies programme and 27
students at the evening class.
The lecture series commences on 13 February at 7.30pm in the Central
Library, Grand Parade, Cork. Members of the public are invited to
attend and admission is free.
