What Food can Teach Us - Public Forum, 30 January

Foods that affect your mood, how food can be used to tackle obesity and keep healthy people healthy, and how antibiotic resistance can be overcome by even more clever probiotics - there's something for everyone here.  These topics will be presented in a Public Forum, Food for Life, to be held on Tuesday next (January 30th) in UCC, where members of the public will be given the opportunity to hear leading experts in the field.

This is an ideal chance for concerned parents, guardians, specialists and those interested in the general subject of food, to learn more about a topic that is quickly becoming a major focal point in medicine and health. The Forum is being organised by UCC's Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), a UCC/Teagasc Research Centre focusing on gastrointestinal health and the development of new therapies for a wide range of disorders, including Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and food poisoning.

The Forum will be chaired by Professor Patrick Wall of the School of Public Health and Population Science, UCD and Chairman of the European Food Safety Authority and will hear contributions from a number of noted experts.  Food and Mood is the subject of a talk to be delivered by Professor Ted Dinan, APC and Psychiatry, UCC, who will show how diet can be used in the fight against depression and stress; Dr Linda Giblin, Teagasc, will discuss Tackling Obesity with Food, and how obesity, compounded by a sedentary lifestyle, is primarily diet-induced; Food Intelligence: keeping healthy people healthy will be addressed by Prof Paul Ross, APC and Head of Biotechnology, Teagasc. Prof Ross will introduce the novel idea of  'mining milk' for its beneficial and health-giving compounds, while Dr Sinead Corr, APC, UCC, will talk about Probiotics and recent progress in the constant battle against foodborne disease.

With free admission and a welcome for all, the Forum promises a most interesting evening during which a new understanding of health issues that affect most people in one way or another, will be offered. There will also be plenty of time for the audience to pose questions.

The venue is Lecture Theatre G01, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, College Road, UCC, starting at 7.30pm, January 30th. The Forum is part of the APC's mission 'to bring science to society'. The APC is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and industry.
