"Renewable Energy - Can it Make a Significant Contribution to Ireland's Energy needs?"
Due to recent oil price increases, and pending peak oil production,
together with increased evidence of climate change, there is
considerable debate currently within Europe regarding the role that may
be played by energy efficiency, renewable energy and nuclear energy. Dr
Brian Ó Gallachóir, who will deliver the next lecture of the Faculty of
Science Public Lecture Series at UCC, will focus on the extent to which
renewable energy can deliver in Ireland and make a serious contribution
to our future energy needs.
"Ambitious targets are currently under consideration, but since 1990,
only 2% of our energy needs have come from renewable energy" said Dr Ó
Gallachóir, lecturer in Energy Engineering at UCC. He is also principal
investigator in the Sustainable Energy Research Group within the
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCC. Brian is also
a co-ordinator of UCC's taught Masters Programme in Sustainable Energy
and Strategic Advisor to Sustainable Energy Ireland's Energy Policy
Statistical Support Unit. An applied sciences graduate of Dublin
Institute of Technology, Brian moved to Cork in 1990 to carry out a
Doctoral research programme in ocean wave energy in the Department of
Applied Mathematics. From 1995 - 1998, he was Technical Manager of the
Renewable Energy Information Office of Sustainable Energy Ireland. He
then returned to UCC to carry out research into sustainable energy
technologies and sustainable energy policies.
The lecture takes place at UCC's Boole Lecture Theatre 4 at 8pm on
Wednesday, 31 January. The highly popular lecture series,
organised by Professor William Reville of the Faculty of Science, UCC,
continues weekly until 28 March 2007. Admission to the lecture is
free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
